It’s been a stinking hot day- so much for autumn coming on.

We went out for brekky and a movie today- finally. We went and saw Bobby, which was so much better than I expected. There were parts that seemed quite preachy, but the last 10 minutes made up for so much. It was more than the politics; it was a human connection to that time. As someone who didn’t live through it, it really gave me a perspective.

The cast was great; I loved Laurence Fishburne and Freddy Rodriguez. Lindsay Lohan and Elijah Wood, their performances and story I found a little jarring and unreal. Overall it was good. I’m not sure why I keep my poorly neglected review log. I really should put some more effort into it and actually get out there and see some more movies in the cinema.

The movie also got me thinking- we live in a time when there is really very little true hope. Everyone is cynical, self centered and out for themselves. We don’t feel despair because we really don’t feel true hope. It’s such a pity- I can’t imagine the loss that people who saw the Kennedy and King assasinations felt.

Currently watching Millennium on the couch- it’s a Sunday.

Instead of doing our usual brooding and planning for the first term of school BMB and I have been social. For the public holiday yesterday, we went to Doug’s- BBQ steak and talked computer, comics and all manner of nerdy things with some of his mates. Then we were even more nerdy and went to GOMA to see the final Beyond Anime session. It wasn’t as good as the before anime exhibition, but I was excited to see the work of Kuroska- because I had heard about him and was excited about his use of photocopy technique. 20 minutes of his program was quite interesting- but the last half hour was tedious and became boring. I was very disappointed.

Nat has been our film companion the last few weeks. She came out last night and today we flew into town to see The Fountain with her. It was quite good- I don’t know what I was expecting, but I liked it. There were parts I found overwhelmingly depressing, but like What Dreams May Come, there were uplifting moments that made it bittersweet.

We are so social and outgoing- we’re even going out to Sunday brekky with Kate tomorrow and maybe another movie. For the last few weeks – this could be my dream life. So why do I have to go back to work?

Before the memories fade and my sunburn begins to blister, I thought I might add a few visual examples from out BDO experience. I could have just re-edited my last entry and dropped them in there- but I’m a slack arse. Inspired by Frank, I thought I’d share our schedule. Now normal people sit down and circle a few acts that they want to see during the day. Instead I sat down with a three tiered system:

green- bands I absolutely had to see

orange- bands I’d like to see

blue- bands I wouldn’t mind seeing

But of course, even the most obsessive compulsive plans don’t go to schedule. What we saw was fewer, but definitely worthwhile:

I got some good pics.

Well after today, my holidays are officially over. I apologise for the lack of blogging, but for most of the last four weeks I’ve been lacking much motivation and passion to do anything- meaning that my to do list has not been reduced and very little has been achieved. That said, I’ve caught up with some good films, done a few things and spent some quality time wtih my family, both pink and furry.

However this weekend brought back something I forgot I was passionate about- music. Yesterday we went to the Big Day Out for the first time in eight or nine years- it was fantastic. I love live music, but sometimes it all seems like so much of a hassle. Being able to see several acts at once makes the experience all the more worthwhile, so that you don’t worry about the dust, the long lines for the loo( with no paper), and the overpriced food.

The acts were great, highlights were:The Herd; Peaches (even though we were miles away), Muse and The Killers. Frank and Orz were with us most of the day and when the big acts started went on their way.

Being oldies, we brought our own food and water (bad idea- too heavy) and left early; avoiding the gridlock later. We splurged on a hotel room and had a leisurely breakfast, driving back this morning.

If I can find my way out of back to school stuff and get my arse into gear, I might post some pics (or even dodgy video:))

a)rushed off my ass

b) enjoying the little moments of calm and time to myself before I’m rushed off my ass again in the rush to get to the end of the year.

My grade 12s graduated this week- which has been exciting and a bit teary. I’ve felt a bit like a rock star, with kids wanting to hug me, have their photo taken with me and telling me how I’ve changed their life. Of course, I’m not letting it go to my head. It’s been nice- I love this class, so it’s nice to know they feel the same about me. They had their formal on Wednesday night and looked gorgeous. I, on the other hand, felt fat, silly and the do I got looked wrong. My fabulous dress was a bit too small and my hair looked like orphan Annie. I’d love to show you how gorgeous some of the girls looked, but they’re not really photos I should be publishing without their permission.

Friday was the graduation- more hugs and tears. I only then realised how much I adore this group and want really good things. So if any of you, my gorgeous 12s have stumbled onto my blog (God forbid!)- Good luck!

Saturday was Rock the vote. BMB and I volunteered on the ground crew and worked the gate for a few hours. For a few bizarre minutes I acosted Steve Cannane , who was recording a story there, and went into fawning fangirl mode. That’s be me- I go for the journos, not the rockstars. Then there was the Resin Dogs, a few beers and the token weirdo. Frank and Oreon got there just in time for Spiderbait. We were also amazed at how short Andrew from the Chaser was- but pleased to see him. I didn’t get a pic, as I thought I’d been too much of a fangirl for one day.
Later, we hung out and watched Butterfly Effect and Shihad from our “old people’s seat” on picnic tables on the grass.

But we got up and boogied for You Am I- the last band. I forgete just how much effort they put into a show. It’s a physically extreme effort, and Tim looked exhausted be the end, but I got some ok pics and some dogy video I might put on You tube. I’ve already put the pics up to a (private) picasa gallery- email if you’d like to have a look.
Sunday, we had a traditional Gymp brekky at
Sunnybank and went to see the Prestige, which was great. It was so good catching up with Frank- she’s had a crap couple of months and it was good to let her know there’s a life and love for her outside of all that. Busy weekend- tiring, but good.
I’ll blog sooner next time- promise.

-”Dirty Business” Dresden Dolls

It’s a little hard to sum up the last few days- it would probably be easier if I broke it down into daily entries, but then you’d miss the overwhelming weirdness and urgency of it all.

If I take you backwards through this weekend, at least that way you’ll end up with the happy and exciting part, and not the dowdy reason I’m sitting depressed on the couch right now.

You see, today I spent three hours in emergency getting my blood pressure down, followed by a nice visit to my cardiologist and then home to rest. I’m taking this week off work- which is going to make some problems of it’s own, but I think it’s in the best interest of my health. It’s a pity everything has gone so pear shaped, because I had the most astounding and fantastic weekend.

Sunday was interesting. I dragged BMB along to the Brisbane Devmeet. We rode the trains into Southbank, and I forgot how much I like Brisbane train, in a weird way. I was feeling a little out of sorts, shy and like a bit of an old poser, so we didn’t stay too long. Besides, we had places to go and people to meet. The rest of the afternoon was great, BMB, a couple friends and I went into the Valley for a yummy lunch , some beers and to listen to some music at the Valley Fiesta. Then we headed off to the Amazing Human Body exhibit at the RNA. Then home on the train…. Saturday, BMB had council, so we took I took it fairly easy on Saturday, did some cleaning and caught up on some reading. Saturday night we caught up on our TV viewing and had some takeaway.

Warning: heavy photographic content follows, just because….

I had been waiting for Friday night for quite a while, because we had tickets to the Dresden Dolls. Needless to say, BMB and I were a little excited and got dressed up:

While I thought my outfit (which you can’t see here, but it was a lovely black and pink corset) was pretty special, it was nothing compared to what some of the other fans were wearing. Frank went all out and had a gorgeous corset, dress and falls. She was running a little late, and missed my new ‘discovery- Jason Webley. He was fantastic, sort of like a pirate Tom Waits, but very funny and great with audience participation, at one stage- I was in a island of sane static people, while the rest of the crowd looked at their fingers in the air and turned around in circles- crazy!

The other support acts were local, The Red Paintings and Zen Zen Zo- both of which were amazingly theatrical and gorgeous to watch. Zen Zen Zo have a reputation for physical theatre that’s a little controversial, so they didn’t disappoint and the Red Paintings are an amazing mix of music, costumes, multimedia and live rock. It was astounding.

Seeing the Dresden Dolls was one of those fan girl moments- after listening and watching and imagining for so long, it was great to see them perform live, after all, as a cabaret act, performance is a vast proportion of their act. They were very energetic and giving. I wish I had remembered a set list, but I was so caught up in the moment and since my illness has come back, I think Friday night has taken on another significance for me.

We were quite a way back, so while I tried to get pictures, they weren’t that good.

Someone who clearly has a better camera, a better spot and a lot more photographic talent is Leni, who has a whole gallery of shots on Fasterlouder.

I love them, and you should check out the rest of her work- it’s fantastic.

So this weekend, has had a huge impact on my psyche and what I guess is to come, I won’t forget this one in a hurry.

I had to see the dietician this morning, nothing really new- but I’m going to give it a try, even if at least to have something to show the doctor in 6 weeks to show I’m trying, that I want to be better again. I hate feeling like I haven’t beaten this- it’s such a failure.

In happier news, I’m off to the Dresden Dolls tomorrow night, in full gear

Is it really Sunday night again?
I can’t believe another week has slipped by- there is so much I haven’t got done. The week was busy, and I was planning a quiet weekend- instead it’ s been busy too.
Last night we had a going away curry for Frank at Kuma’s, lovely curry, but I drank too much and the rain seemed to get me down a little, I’m not sure why.
This morning we did the nerd movie and brekky thing- we saw Serenity. The movie was a good extension of the series, and very Joss Whedon.

**SPOILER ALERT****- click more below to see what I really thought

I finished off the weekend watching episodes of Get up, Stand up I taped back in August.

All in all a nice weekend, but I’m not sure when I catch up…………….

I can’t believe they killed Wash- what’s with that???!!!!!!!!!
