Cozy weekend
I’m about to head off to bed, but I wanted to blog.
It’s been a nice weekend, I achieved a lot and I feel calm.
Just finished skating, which was great. Also did ‘Learn to skate’ classes on Saturday- which were full of kids and amusing, at least for me. Also got my computer fixed and cooked up these little gems.
Some yummy orange and cardamon cupcakes from 500 Cupcakes, which the lovely Frank gave me for my birthday. I’ve used a couple of recipes as a base and then made variations with them, this was the first one I made straight up and they were great.
I also baked a seed loaf, very sweet, but more than passable.
Today has been quite lazy and lovely, on the computer, talked to Frank. Then skating.

It’s strange what we do when the weather changes- I didn’t really notice until tonight.
It may seem to outsiders that we’ve been a little less social in the last few week, but I blame the weather.

For the next four weeks BMB has an office job working nine to five. Which means that I have to cook dinner. This is a bit of a scary prospect- I’m no cook and I really need to control what I am eating.
So this is an opportunity and a bit of an education. I’ve planned the month’s menu (bigger and better than BMB’s weekly menus :)) from low fat and low carb cook books.
I think it’ll be a good chance to think about food, what I eat and how to prepare it.
Note to self- I should cross post this to my diet blog

I go through weeks of not wanting to blog anything, today there is so much I want to blog about I don’t know where to start. That doesn’t mean it’s at all particularly interesting, but there’s a lot I’d like to share. So I might put down a summary and see how I go- I wanted to talk about:
* how great the last couple of Saturday nights have been, because BMB and I went out for dinner and a movie-of- substance
* we have a very sexy new BBQ
* BMB mowing the grass makes me think that summer must be almost here
* I love relaxing on a Sunday, and so am getting no work done
* after taunting my husband about having a “soft spot for prog rock”- he had a good chuckle when I was listening to the new Muse album. Regardless, I like it- but it is prog.
that I used to weekly read 30+ blogs but I’ve hardly read any of them in the last 8 or 9 months, although this week I’ve tried to check some as I’ve updated my blogroll. I miss being able to read them
* how I bought myslef some Mirrormask collectables yesterday
* how I’m desperate to see one of Lano and Woodley’s last shows.
Sick Kitty
Rather than tell you about my tiring and depressing week back at work- I’m going to be a mum for a little while. I guess if I had real kids my blog would feature them- as some of my favourite blogs do, as a mum to furkids- I don’t do it as often.
This week has been working and dribbly- as Aurora seems to have caught the cat flu.
We’ve had two visits to the vets, various methods of administering antihistamine pills and an anti biotic paste, many towels mopping up alot of mucus, along with a few panics.
In short, she’s getting better and will be fine. Somehow- I think she’s been milking her illness for all it’s worth.
Texas has missed playing with her, but every time ‘rora sneezes, she doesn’t seem to miss Texas- eww!
So many holidays or Is that it?
One thing many people, teachers and non- teachers alike say about my profession is “at least you have all those holidays”. What? Holidays?
I’m sorry, I don’t believe it is a great big perk of my profession. This time off is often spent marking and planning, or doing things we’re unable to do, because of the time we have to spend on our job.
This week is a case in point: I spent a couple of days with my Mum, because I don’t get time to drive up there during term; I spent a night with my brother and best friend- which I rarely have time to do; did some marking, still have a shitload to do (and I’m procrastinating on that); spent time with my *husband*, cooking, hanging out, watching movies; watched some videos I wanted to watch on my own; read and took part in some political activism.
I may just be another whinging teacher, but I don’t have a holiday- this is reclaiming my real-life
PS- I promise I will stop bitching about work real soon, as soon as it’s all sorted.
PPS- while all that resurrection stuff is really wasted on me, Happy Easter to you and I hope you got lots of chocolate eggs to remind you of your salivation Salvation
Of friends and food
What a great start to my holiday week and a bit.
After the fear of the Friday afternoon’s fire, Frank, Oreon and my little brother came over for drinks and pizza, homemade of course. We sat around and talked, had a good time, gossiped and watched the teev. It’s nice just to hang out with friends and family- we don’t do it enough. I miss my brother and am as guilty as hell that I don’t have enough time for him lately. I’m sure he’ll live, but he seems so down at the moment. It’s the same for Frank- I never spent enough time with her when she was here, now I miss her and don’t see her enough. I’ve got to fix that. I’m such a slack friend.
Saturday night, BMB made a *huge ass* Chinese banquet. He made so much food, we didn’t finish it all. Us, the hoovers from hell. So much has changed. Of course, we broke the first rule of yum cha ( which is not “don’t talk about yumcha”)- don’t eat deep fried first. We had dim sims, spring rolls, meatballs and prawn toasts.
There’s still chicken wings and spare ribs in the fridge. I think the chicken wings will make a great lunch and we’re taking the spare ribs up to Mum for dinner.
Yes, after a lovely weekend, we’re off to helltown for some quality time with the maternal unit. Hopefully she’s going to teach me how to overlock and without a doubt I’ll have to do something on the computer. See you in a couple of days.
Putting it all in perspective
To say I’ve had a bad week would be an understatement, there has been tears, yelling and gnashing of teeth. It’s been awful. Not kid related at all- mainly to do with what I’ve got to do, in what time and the support (or in some cases, lack thereof) I am getting. Continue reading »
